Rescues Underway at Waimoku Falls & Pīpīwai Trail

Kīpahulu rescue. Maui Now graphic.

Emergency crews are responding two separate reports involving injured hikers in the Kīpahulu area of Haleakalā National Park in East Maui.

The incidents were reported at around 3:21 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24, 2016.

One injury involves a female hiker with an ankle injury at the bottom of Waimoku Falls.

Another injury involves a woman in her 50s on the Old Pipiwai Trail who reportedly sustained a hip injury.

The Maui Fire Department’s Air-1 helicopter was dispatched to assist with the rescues, but was cancelled for at least one of the individuals who was reportedly making their way back out on their own.
