Unscheduled Cane Fire in Pāʻia Quickly Contained

A brush fire reported about a quarter mile above the Pāʻia Gym on Baldwin Avenue on Thursday night burned a mall area of sugar cane before being brought under control.

The fire was reported at 7:32 p.m. on Thursday, June 30, 2016.

When Pāʻia firefighters arrived at 7:44 p.m., they found a 75 x 75 foot fire burning in the sugar cane field on the east side of Baldwin Avenue.

Crews were able to contain the fire by 7:56 p.m. A Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company representative arrived at 8:08 p.m. and took over the final efforts to extinguish the unscheduled cane fire.

The cause of the fire was undetermined. No structures were threatened and no injuries were reported.

A water tanker from Kahului also responded to the incident.
