Maui’s Alexander Designs & Remodeling, LLC is one of several companies on the Valley Isle that will be recognized this week by the Pacific Business News as one of Hawaiʻi’s “Fastest 50.”

The publication will host an awards reception Thursday evening, Aug. 11, 2016 in Honolulu, honoring the businesses, with an announcement detailing each company’s rank by revenue growth.

Alexander Designs & Remodeling, LLC, started over 40 years ago by Rick Alexander, and is now owned and operated by his eldest son Palani Alexander.

“What started as a small cabinet shop has now turned into a full blown design, cabinet, and remodeling company,” the younger Alexander tells Maui Now.

“Growing up I was at the shop watching and learning the ways my dad would create things of beauty. Being at the shop on the weekends made me dislike the business but after doing my own thing in the mainland I came home to help my dad who wasn’t able to do the things he used,” said Alexander.

Alexander said he figured he would be home for a year or so to help his dad, but actually “fell in love” with the business.  “I was able to see why my dad did this for most of his life. You see the gratitude on the clients faces and the changes you make in their homes.  It brings me joy,” said Alexander.

Since taking over in 2008 Alexander Designs & Remodeling has grown from just selling and installing cabinets to now doing full remodels, and now has a cabinet showroom, that rivals other companies in the state.

“We now employ anywhere from 7-10 employees at a time. We have at least 3-8 projects at a time depending on the size of the project,” he noted.

Today, Alexander has developed the same sense of pride in workmanship that he saw in his father.  “I love what I do. Like they say if you love what you do then it’s not considered work. But like anything else, you need to put in the time if you want to succeed at it. Nothing comes easy,” he said.

As for the recognition, Alexander expressed humility and appeared more comfortable out of the spotlight, pointing to the success of the company’s team of employees instead.

“There will always be a demand for great remodeling companies, and I consider my team to be great.  Without them I wouldn’t be able to do this,” said Alexander.

He continued saying, “I am truly humbled and grateful for every opportunity that I get on a daily basis.”

Looking ahead, Alexander said, “We’ve been working with a new product called Knotwood which is slowly taking off on the island. We’re also working on another company which will solely do full ground up construction.”
