East Maui Traffic Advisory: Treacherous Roads

Inclement weather conditions in the East Maui area of Hāna have made roadways treacherous and impassable in certain areas, according to Maui police.

Police say Kapia Road and ʻUlaino Road have been affected by flooding.

Motorists are advised to stay off the roads and avoid driving into Hāna until the weather subsides.

The National Weather Service has EXTENDED the FLOOD ADVISORY for MAUI ISLAND in effect until 5:45 p.m.

A Flood Advisory means that nuisance flooding is occurring or imminent. A Flood Advisory may be upgraded to a Flash Flood Warning if flooding worsens and poses a threat to life and property.

This advisory may need to be extended if heavy rain persists.

A Flash Flood Watch is also in effect for Maui County through Sunday afternoon.

At 2:39 p.m. radar and rain gauges indicated that rainfall has diminished over Maui. However, stream gauges and social media video posts showed that runoff levels remain high over portions of windward Haleakalā from Kīpahulu to Huelo, and over windward west Maui.

Locations in this advisory include but are not limited to: Kahului, Lahaina, Kāʻanapali, Waikapū, Honokōhau, Paʻuwela, Huelo, Pāʻia, Makawao, Puʻunēnē, Kula and Waiehu.

The National Weather Service says that radar at 11:55 a.m., indicated heavy showers with embedded thunderstorms moving over windward East Maui with additional rain approaching from the South East.

Rainfall rates in excess of 2 inches per hour can be expected in the heaviest showers.

Additional showers are also moving quickly across the windward portions of the West Maui Mountains.

Locations in the advisory include: Kaupō, Kīpahulu, Hāna, Pāʻia, Makawao, Puʻunēnē, Kula and Waiehu.
