One man was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for wounds sustained in a stabbing incident early Sunday morning in Kahului.

The incident was reported at 12:19 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017, at the Kaʻahumanu Avenue, Puʻunēnē Avenue intersection.

Maui police Lieutenant Gregg Okamoto tells Maui Now that the incident was reported as an altercation between two males and was initially classified as an Attempted Murder case.

Authorities say that after one of the men was transported to the Emergency Room, it was determined that the injuries were found to be non-life threatening.

The other man fled the scene before police arrived and has not been identified.

Detectives with the Maui Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division continue to investigate the incident.
