Yuki Lei Sugimura

The Japanese Cultural Society of Maui announced that Yuki Lei Sugimura will receive its prestigious Nihon Bunka Award at its annual Shinnen Enkai (New Year’s) dinner scheduled on Saturday, Jan. 28, in the Elleair Rainbow Ballroom at the Maui Beach Hotel.

The Shinnen Enkai will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the traditional otoso (sake welcome) with no-host cocktail hour to follow. Dinner is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Nihon Bunka award recognizes individuals for their excellence and contributions to the Japanese arts and culture, and for their unselfish willingness to share their talents with the community.

Organization leaders say Sugimura has shown a deep commitment to preserving and perpetuating the Japanese culture through her many years of service.

For the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui alone, she co-chaired the Maui Matsuri for the past 16 years, chaired the Shinnen Enkai for many years, and served as president for two years.

Sugimura, who is a newly sworn-in Maui County Councilmember, has also been involved with the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaiʻi and coordinated the mikoshi project for the Honolulu Festival.

Through selfless volunteerism and leadership, Yuki has inspired many in our community to learn, enjoy, and embrace the Japanese culture.
