In solidarity with the Women’s March on Washington, a walk and gathering will also take place on Maui on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017 from 8 to 11 a.m. The event will begin and end at the front lawn on the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College Campus.

Organizers say this is an inclusive, free gathering and all are welcome.

“We walk in solidarity and raise our voices to empower women and strengthen our community,” said Virgie Cantorna, event organizer and Executive Director of the Safe Keiki Project. “We are walking for the protection of our rights, our safety, our health and our families.”

Leiʻohu Ryder, Hawaiian spiritual leader, visionary, healer, singer/songwriter, and educator, will begin the event with a message and pule that seeks to “embrace, unify, bless and honor all life.”After a short march along Kaʻahumanu Avenue, a gathering will be held with Maui musicians, poets, and performers; sharing ideas, song, and verse in acknowledgement of community values and diversity.

The organization of the Maui event began with Teresa Shook of Hāna who put out a message on Facebook, inviting friends to join her in a march on Washington. She awoke the next day to more than 40,000 people interested in the event. Today there are over 200 known Women’s Marches that will take place around the world on Jan. 21, 2017.

The March is sponsored by The UH-Maui Human Services Program and Mālama Lāhui Kanaka Club. All proceeds of the event will support the Safe Keiki Project.

This march will take place along with hundreds of others events across the country and around the globe on the same day. The Women’s March on Washington organizers (co-chaired by Gloria Steinem) are currently projecting 200,000 attendees.
