West Maui Disaster Planning Meetings Planned

The Maui County Emergency Management Agency will host a series of free community meetings in partnership with the West Maui Taxpayers Association to develop a disaster plan to meet specific needs of West Maui communities.

A series of monthly workshops presented by subject-matter experts through the Hawaiian Hazards and Resilience Program will provide education and outreach. The sessions, which are free and open to the public, will help participants better understand hazards, and offer tools and information to guide mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery planning for the community.

The first series of HHARP workshops will cover a program overview, an introduction to emergency management in Hawaiʻi, and hazard awareness. Sessions will be held at the Lahaina Civic Center as follows:

Thursday, Feb. 16, 5:30-8 p.m. (Lahaina Civic Center – Social Hall)
Thursday, Mar. 16, 5:30-8 p.m. (Lahaina Civic Center – Amphitheater)
Thursday, Apr. 20, 5:30-8 p.m. (Lahaina Civic Center – Amphitheater)
Thursday, May 18, 5:30-8 p.m. (Lahaina Civic Center – Amphitheater)

“Our community is diverse and we need everyone’s participation to develop community plans,” said Emergency Management Officer Anna Foust. “Communities that are capable of caring for themselves during and after natural hazard events are better equipped to recover from the negative health, environmental, and economic impacts so common after a disaster.”

This program is supported by the Maui County Emergency Management Agency, the Pacific Disaster Center and the Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency.
