Flood Advisory for Maui Until 5 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory for the island of Maui until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017.

At 1:57 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over the slopes of the West Maui Mountains from Waiheʻe Valley to Kapalua. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour. Additional rain may continue to develop over the next couple of hours.

Locations in this advisory include but are not limited to: Kahului, Kahakuloa, Kapalua, Waikapū, Honokōhau, Waiheʻe, Wailuku, Waiehu, Nāpili-Honokōwai, Kāʻanapali and Honolua Bay.

A Flood Advisory means that nuisance flooding is occurring or imminent. A Flood Advisory may be upgraded to a Flash Flood Warning if flooding worsens and poses a threat to life and property.

This advisory may need to be extended if heavy rain persists.

A Flash Flood Watch is also in effect for Maui County through Wednesday afternoon.

As a precaution, the public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas that are prone to flooding.

Rainfall and runoff can also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor breaking action.

Motorists and pedestrians are reminded not to cross fast flowing or rising water in their vehicle or on foot.
