Maui 4th Grader Among Winners of Memorial Day Poster Contest

For the first time in several years, two neighbor islands students are winners in the 2017 Mayor Kirk Caldwell Memorial Day Poster Contest.

Talan Akina-Chong, fourth grader at Lihikai Elementary School in Kahului was one of the nine winners and will fly to Honolulu tomorrow for a congratulatory ceremony that will be held in the Mayor’s Conference Room at 10 a.m. Akina-Chong placed third in his division.

1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers in each of the three categories will be recognized and rewarded for their skillful depictions requesting lei for the Memorial Day Ceremony at the National Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.

Hawaiian Airlines donated the flights to allow Akina-Chong and Saige DeloSantos, 4th grader at Keaukaha Elementary School in Hilo, to attend the ceremony.
