Half-Acre Fire on Hāna Highway, Nāhiku
Hāna firefighters battled a half-acre grass fire off of the Hāna Highway in Nāhiku early Wednesday morning.
The incident was reported at around 4:06 a.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2017, by a passing motorist who reported seeing lots of smoke in the Wailua-Nāhiku area near Mile 22, but did not see any flames.
Firefighters arrived on scene at 4:38 a.m. to find grass and light brush on fire off the shoulder of the highway. Crews reported that the fire had nearly burned itself out, but was still smoldering.
A Hāna fire engine and water tanker had the fire extinguished by 5 a.m. The cause of the fire was undetermined. No structures were threatened.
