“Flatbread for the Watershed” Helps Plant Trees
The Flatbread Company in Pāʻia will host a benefit on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, to raise money for a Leeward Haleakalā Watershed Restoration Partnership.
A portion of all pizza sales (both dine-in and take-out) between 5 and 10 p.m. on June 6, will go towards reforesting the leeward slopes of Haleakalā.
Formed in 2003 and covering 43,000 acres, the goal of LHWRP is to restore koa forests on Haleakalā from Makawao through ‘Ulupalakua to Kaupō between 3,500 and 6,500 feet elevation.
According to the LHWRP website, over the past 200 years, systematic deforestation due to overgrazing by feral ungulates and the introduction of invasive plant species and diseases has reduced forest cover to less than 10% of former extents.
Organizers for the event encourage everyone to come in and enjoy the best wood-fired pizza on Maui and help plant a tree.
