The County of Maui announced that it has joined the National Association of Counties, the National Flag Foundation and the National Sheriffs Association in their efforts to provide flag retirement boxes throughout the nation.

The County was made aware of the efforts through a recent publication from NACo and reached out to the organization to participate in the program.

Maui Managing Director Keith Regan said, “we owe a great debt of gratitude to the men and women who fought for our freedom and the many rights that we enjoy as citizens. It’s only appropriate that, in keeping with that spirit, we honor our country’s greatest symbol, our flag, by participating in this program and providing a dignified manner by which we can accept and dispose of worn US Flags.”

The County has placed the flag retirement box in the lobby of the 9th floor in the Kalana O Maui building. Individuals wanting to properly dispose of their worn flags are asked to respectfully fold the flag before placing it in the retirement box and may do so during normal business hours. Once a sufficient number of flags have been collected, the County will work with local organizations to assist in the proper dispensation of the flags.

NACo Executive Director Matthew Chase said, “We are pleased to be able to partner in the provision of these flag retirement boxes. Proper disposal of the US flag goes hand in hand with the commitment we make to public service while simultaneously benefiting our residents.”
