3.8 Earthquake Shakes Na‘alehu, Hawai‘i

There was no tsunami generated from a preliminary magnitude 3.8 earthquake reported at 3:52 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017 ENE of Hawaiian Ocean View on the Big Island of Hawai‘i.

The USGS reports that the quake occurred at a depth of 11.8 km (7.3 miles) and was located: 6 miles NE of Hawaiian Ocean View Estates, Hawaiʻi; 36 miles SSE of Kailua-Kona, Hawaiʻi; 53 miles WSW of Hawaiian Paradise Park, Hawaiʻi; 55 miles SW of Hilo, Hawaiʻi; and 202 miles SE of Honolulu, Oʻahu.

According to the USGS Did You Feel It website, the majority of people who reported feeling the quake were in Naʻalehu, with 36 felt reports made from the area in the first hour of the quake.  Light to moderate shaking was reported from various communities on Hawaiʻi Island.
