Two People Pulled Unresponsive at Keawakapu Beach

A second individual who was pulled unresponsive from South Maui waters during an incident at Keawakapu Beach on Thursday has since died.
Although initial reports indicated that both individuals were in their 20’s, Maui police released information today saying the man was 40-years-old and the female was 37-year-old. Police say both appear to have been visitors from the Republic of Korea.

Two people were found floating and unresponsive in waters at Keawakapu Beach in South Maui on Thursday afternoon, Aug. 2, 2018.
Fire crews responded to the incident at 4:50 p.m. to find bystanders already performing CPR on both individuals. Firefighters and Medics took over care, and continued lifesaving efforts.
Authorities say the two were found very close to shore. One of the victims, a man in his 20’s, was pronounced dead at the scene. It is unclear what events led to the apparent drowning.
The other individual, a female in her 20’s, was transported by Medics to Maui Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
Further information about the victims are unavailable at this time.
Ladder 14 out of Wailea and Engine 6 from Kīhei responded to the incident.
