Hawaiian Paddle Sports and Hawaiʻi Mermaid Adventures are seeking volunteers to join them in their beach cleanup on Sept. 15. at Poʻolenalena Beach Park in Kīhei from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The cleanup is a part of the larger International Coastal Cleanup Day, which the Ocean Conservancy has hosted for the past 30 years. According to the Ocean Conservancy, nearly 12 million volunteers have removed over 220 million pounds of trash from waterways and beaches. Maui’s International Coastal Cleanup event is supported by Mālama Maui Nui in partnership with The Ocean Conservancy’s international cleanup efforts.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle and sun protection. Cleanup supplies will be provided. The first 50 volunteers to check in at the clean up will receive free lunch from Pau Maui Vodka. Volunteers can find the cleanup group by looking for Hawaiʻi Paddle Sports and Hawaiʻi Mermaid Adventure tents and flags that will be set up at the beach park.

Volunteers are encouraged to download the Clean Swell App to keep track of the debris they remove during the cleanup. After the cleanup, this data will be added to the International Coastal Cleanup’s marine debris database, which will help inform policy and debris removal efforts. More information on the cleanup can be found online or by contacting (808) 442-6436.
