Heat Index at Kahului, Maui Reaches 106°F

The heat index reached 106°F at noon on Thursday (Sept. 20, 2018) at Kahului Airport on Maui, according to the National Weather Service.  The actual temperature was 90°F, but it felt 16 degrees hotter because of the humidity, which was around 56%.

Elsewhere across the islands, it was 88°F at the Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole and at the Kaunakakai Airport on Molokaʻi, but the heat index was 98°F and 97°F respectively.

The temperature at the Daniel K Inouye International Airport in Honolulu was 87°F, but the heat index was 95°F.  Hilo Airport was 84°F (HI 90°F); Līhue, Kauaʻi was 82°F (HI 90°F); and Lānaʻi City Airport was 81°F (HI 84°F).

The NWS is forecasting some relief from the hot and muggy pattern on Saturday when a dry to normal tradewind pattern is expected to return.

According to NWS, the Heat Index or the Apparent Temperature is an “accurate measure of how hot it really feels when the Relative Humidity is added to the actual air temperature.”
