Maui Kōkua Collection & Distribution Drive This Weekend
A donation and distribution drive will be held for furloughed federal workers this weekend at the Maui Marketplace in Kahului.
- COLLECTION: The “Helping Hands Loving Hearts” Kōkua Collection Drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019 at the Maui Marketplace (270 Dairy Road, next to Old Navy); and
- DISTRIBUTION: The distribution of collected items will take place the following day, Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the same location.
The event is sponsored by ʻAhahui Kaʻahumanu Chapter IV, Wailuku. Organization leaders say the event is “in keeping with our Queen’s legacy to mālama her people.”
Requested donations include: gas cards, gift cards, canned meat and vegetables, fresh fruits and vegetables, bread, snacks, baby food, formula, diapers, laundry soap, toilet paper, paper towels, bath soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo and conditioner.
During the distribution portion of the event on Sunday, those receiving donations should present a valid federal ID.
Organizers note that those affected by the ongoing government shutdown include federal workers at the Transportation Security Administration, Department of Homeland Security, Coast Guard, Customs and Border Security, Department of the Interior, Haleakalā National Park, Kalaupapa, agricultural airport inspectors, FAA air traffic controllers and others.
