Maui motorists will soon be able to renew their vehicle registration through a self-serve kiosk that opens next week at the Maui Lani Safeway store in Wailuku.

The Department of Finance will hold a grand opening event for the kiosk on Monday, Feb. 11, 2019.

The kiosk houses a self-service terminal that allows people to use a touchscreen to process and print vehicle registration cards and emblems, as an alternative to waiting in line at the Division of Motor Vehicles at the Maui County Service Center.

The machine, referred to as an SST, accepts payments from debit or credit cards. Work on installing kiosks at other locations is ongoing.

“These new terminals will save customers time and be open conveniently at night and on weekends,” said Mayor Michael Victorino. “I’m excited any time we expand services for our customers.”

“Consumers can now register their vehicles, pay for their documents and have everything in hand – all in a matter of minutes,” said Lito Vila, head of the Department of Finance Division of Motor Vehicles and Licensing. “This provides drivers with quick and convenient customer service and puts them back on the road while freeing division employees to focus on more complex customer needs.”

Acting Department of Finance Director Scott Teruya said, “We will closely monitor customer use of these new kiosks to see how they impact service center operations, reducing wait times for other customers, for example. I’m hopeful that we can get the Kīhei and Lahaina kiosks up and running by the end of the month.”

Customers are able to perform the following transactions, provided their vehicle’s safety inspection is current:

  • Renew their car, truck, motorcycle, and trailer registrations.
  • Renew an expired registration up to 10 months and two weeks after expiration.

Vila said, “A kiosk also has been installed at the Kahului Service Center, which accepts cash payments as well as debit and credit cards. Our customer service representatives will gladly assist customers who may need assistance.”

County officials say additional self-service terminals will be available soon at the Safeway stores at the Lahaina Cannery Mall and the Piʻilani Village Shopping Center in Kīhei.

The project vendor is Intellectual Technology Inc., which specializes in kiosks that help Division of Motor Vehicle agencies throughout North America increase the speed, visibility and security of motor vehicle document processing. County officials say the company is an industry leader in DMV kiosk technology with programs in 34 states and jurisdictions.
