Mayor Appoints Guzman as Acting Prosecuting Attorney
Mayor Michael Victorino appointed Don Guzman as acting Prosecuting Attorney for the County of Maui, effective March 1, 2019.
Guzman will need to be confirmed by the County Council. Mayor also announced that Robert Rivera will continue his role as First Deputy Prosecuting Attorney.
“Don is well-qualified and highly capable to serve as the county’s chief prosecutor,” Mayor Victorino said. “He has a long history of serving this community as a former council member and deputy prosecutor. I’m also very happy to be retaining First Deputy Robert Rivera, who has been vital to our county’s judicial system.”
“With this announcement, our Prosecutor’s Office can move forward and continue its important role of protecting our residents and visitors,” Mayor Victorino said.
Guzman, a three-term council member of Kahului, chaired the Legal Affairs Committee and served as vice chair of the County Council. He also ran his own private practice in business, family, criminal and other law for over a decade.
Before opening his practice, Guzman served as a deputy prosecutor and represented the state and county in criminal cases from 2000 to 2005. His experience includes trial court appearances, litigation and managing misdemeanor and felony convictions.
Guzman received his Juris Doctor from Ohio Northern University and his Bachelor of Arts and Science from Creighton University. His community service work includes volunteering for the Bini At Ani, March of Dimes, Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce and Lahaina Junior Golf Association.
