The department’s Air 1 helicopter was called to assist with water drops because of the remote location, which was difficult to access with firefighting vehicles. The fire was quickly contained and later declared extinguished at around noon.

Maui Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro said there were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire is unknown.

Firefighters from Makawao and Kahului responded.
