A worker at Maui Brewing Co. was injured on Monday morning while cutting an open and empty 55 gallon drum.
Fire officials say the drum once held isoprophyl alcohol, and the worker was using a plasma cutter when the drum exploded.
Maui Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro said the 47-year-old male employee sustained injuries to his face and forearm.
Firefighters from the department’s Engine 6 out of Kīhei and Medics treated the man. He was transported conscious and alert to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further care.
Department officials say Hazmat 10 and Ladder 14 were initially called to the incident as a precaution.
