Two hikers visiting Maui from the mainland were rescued after becoming stranded by rising waters at ʻĪao Valley on Sunday afternoon.

The incident was reported at 2:39 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, 2019.

Maui Assistant Fire Chief of Support Services, Val Martin, said firefighters were able to run a rope system and provide life jackets to assist to females across the river and back to safety without using the department’s Air-1 helicopter.

The individuals were part of a larger group of five visitors that were hiking when the incident occurred.

Fire officials say it was raining in the mountains at the time of the rescue.
