Fatality in Kīpahulu District of Haleakalā National Park
Authorities recovered the body of an individual from the Palikea Stream at the Pools of ‘Oheʻo in the Kīpahulu District of Haleakalā National Park late Thursday night, May 30, 2019.
Crews from the Maui Fire Department, Maui Police Department, and the National Park Service initially responded to a report of an injured person in the area. Crews were called to the area at around 10:04 p.m. for a report of a 44-year-old man who was injured from jumping off of a 45-foot bridge into a pond.
After a coordinated search effort, responders recovered the victim’s body in one of the pools.
Fire officials say the crews from Engine 7 found the victim unresponsive under approximately 15-feet of water. The man was brought to shore and carried up steep path to waiting medics.
The victim was pronounced dead on the scene and as of this time has not been identified.
Crews left the scene in the early morning hours, at around 12:30 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2019.
Crews from Engine 7 in Hāna, Rescue 10 out of Kahului and , Battalion Chief 2 responded to the incident.
