Coast Guard, Firefighters Put Out Burning Boat Off Lānaʻi

Coast Guard and Fire personnel rescued two people from a burning boat off North Shore Lānaʻi earlier today. 

The incident was reported at about 10:17 a.m. 

The boat was located approximately 2 miles offshore of Kaiolohia Beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach, when it caught on fire, the Maui Fire Department reports. 

Firefighters from Lānaʻi and Kaunakakai initially responded to the incident and were later assisted by Coast Guard personnel from Oʻahu and Maʻalaea.

The boatʻs engine and battery were disabled from the fire. Crews doused the vessel with water and were able to put out the flames by 12:17 p.m. 

The boat came from Lahaina and is named “Kuʻulei.” No injuries were reported and no medical assistance was needed, according to Maui fire officials. 

The cause of the blaze is unknown at this time.
