Mauiʻs only adult hula competition, Kū Mai ka Hula, will return to the Maui Arts & Cultural Centerʻs Castle Theatre for its 14th annual event on Sept. 14.

This year’s competition will feature award-winning hālau from around Hawai‘i, the continental US, and Japan.

The competitors will be judged by a group of renowned kumu hula, including Iwalani Kalima, Ulalia Woodside, and Kaponoʻai Molitau.

A related panel discussion, Hula Ma‘i, will be held on Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the MACC’s McCoy Studio Theater.

The panel will be led by Maui Kumu Hula Hōkūlani Holt and will discuss the misrepresentation of procreational chants in modern times. Parental discretion is advised, as the discussion will include adult subject matter.

Tickets are now on sale for both events. Click here for more information.
