Beach cleanups will be held throughout Maui and across the globe on Sept. 21 in recognition of International Coastal Cleanup Day.

According to a press release from the Pacific Whale Foundation, communities in over 100 countries are expected to participate.

In the release, the organization noted that about 70 to 90 percent of debris found on Maui is composed of plastic, which has disastrous impacts for all marine life.

One cleanup will be held from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Kahului Harbor, and another is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lahaina Harbor

PWF also just kicked off a 30-Day Instagram countdown that runs until ICCD.

The countdown is calling on Instagrammers to post everyday alternatives to single-use plastics using the hashtag #CoastalPWF and tagging @pacificwhalefoundation. A winner will be named each week.
