Flood Advisory Issued for South Maui

The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for southern parts of Maui.

Locations in the advisory include, but are not limited to, ‘Ulupalakua, Kula, Kēōkea, Kīhei, Wailea and Mākena.

According to an announcement from the NWS, rains were detected falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour in this region at about 3:46 p.m. 

The NWS is urging residents to avoid streams, drainage ditches, and low lying areas prone to flooding.

“Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding,” the announcement continued.

“Reduced visibility and poor braking action. Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on
foot. Turn around, do not drown.”

The advisory is expected to last until 6:45 p.m. but could be extended if heavy rain persists.
