Free Talk to Discuss Civil Rights in Hawaiʻi

The public is invited to a talk story event that will focus on the current landscape of civil rights and the criminal justice system in Hawaiʻi.

The free event is a part of the American Civil Liberties Unionʻs nationwide Smart Justice campaign and will discuss the organizationʻs recent work in the legislature.

The campaign aims to address systemic racial inequalities in the criminal legal system and reducing incarceration rates.

“Following the Maui jail riots from earlier this year, now is a critical time to sit down with the Maui community and discuss the future of our jails and prisons, how mass incarceration is affecting us in our own backyard, as well as our vision of criminal justice reform,” ACLU of Hawai‘i Smart Justice Campaign director Monica Espitia said in a press release.

“Hawaii’s current prices and practices around mass incarceration are not increasing public safety, and may even be setting us back.”

Attendees will be encouraged to provide input on civil rights concerns in their community.

The talk will be held on Oct. 10 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Maui Coffee Attic in Wailuku.
