Turbulent Seas Expected For Maui, Molokaʻi

The east-facing shores of Maui and Molokaʻi are under a high surf warning until 6 tomorrow morning, the National Weather Service announced.

A high surf warning means that “dangerous, battering waves will pound the shoreline. This will result in very dangerous swimming conditions, and deadly rip currents,” the county wrote in an announcement.

A large, long period north-northeast swell is expected to build today, peak tonight, and gradually diminish on Sunday.

East-facing shores could see waves reach 12 to 16 feet.

These forecast surf heights are estimates of the height of the face or front of waves.

“Expect ocean water occasionally sweeping across portions of beaches, very strong breaking waves, and strong longshore and rip currents,” the county warned.

Beachgoers are being urged to exercise caution.
