Gertrude Leimomi Opunui

October 21, 1934 – December 28, 2019

Gertrude Leimomi Opunui, 85, of Lahaina, passed away on Dec. 28, 2019 at her residence. She was born in Lahaina on Oct. 21, 1934.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2020, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Lahaina, service will begin at 11 a.m., and burial will follow at 1 p.m. at Maui Veterans Cemetery.

Gertrude was a homemaker.

She is survived by her sons, George Opunui III, Harold Keola (Bernie) Opunui, Darren (Penny) Opunui, Teddy (Janeice) Opunui, and Kalanimoku (Tania) Opunui; daughters, Georgie Ann (Gerald) Opunui Kaita, Leann Opunui (Gary) Sherman, Susy (Mario) Ortiz, Bernadine (Richard) Wilkinson, Ilima (Robert) Ching, Leinaala (Daniel) Padelford, and Charmaine (Hano) Ganer; 24 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Gertrude was predeceased by her husband, George Opunui Jr.; daughter, Kaleimomi Opunui Hiromura; and daughter-in-law, Sonya Opunui.

Bernard Rodrigues

Bernard Rodrigues

November 9, 1962 – December 27, 2019

Bernard was born on Nov. 9, 1962 in Wailuku. His parents were Manuel and Lillian Rodrigues (both deceased).

Bernard is survived by his three children Sasha (Ikaika) Tanaka, Chelsey (Dedrick) Rittmeister, & Bully Boy (Tiare) Rodrigues. Five grandchildren Avry, Emmi, Karter, Amayah, & Kaira. And former wife Leona Arcangel.

Brothers Jerome Rodrigues (deceased), Greg (Pam) Rodrigues, Leroy (Charmaine) Rodrigues, Jeff (Eileen) Rodrigues. Step mom Juanita Rodrigues, step sister Val (Dan) Bridges and step brothers Mark, Brian, and Chris Moniz. Step sister-in-law Doreen Moniz.

Bernard is also survived by many aunties, uncles, cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Bernard loved his family, surfing and was known for his genuine aloha spirit. He also worked at the Maui Marriott Ocean Club for about 20 years. He will be missed by many.

Services will be held at Ballard’s Family Mortuary on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. luncheon to follow.

February 2, 1942 – December 25, 2019

William “Ted” Holmes passed away peacefully on Christmas Day at Hospice Maui Hale. He was the only son born to predeceased parent; William & Marie Holmes on Feb. 2, 1942 (Ground Hog Day) in Lancaster, California. He is survived by his wife of 39 + years, Clarice, sons: Greg (Kimberley) of Arizona, Ivan (Kelly) of Oregon, daughters: Wendy Holmes of Texas and Karen Orosco of California. Sisters: Charlotte German (Oxnard, CA), Helen Mattarocci (Lancaster, CA) and Debra Holmes (Porterville, CA) Brother -in-laws: Louie Sablan (Arizona), Joe (Kathy) Sablan (CA), Kenny Sablan (CA), James Sablan (CA) and sister-in-laws: Isabelle Camacho (CA) Donna (Lamont) Freeman (CA)and mother-in-law Lorraine Sablan (CA) and several nieces and nephews.
At a young age Ted began working on vehicles and continued in that field of work. He worked for Los Angeles County Mechanical Department Shops & Garages as a Sheriff station mechanic and then as one of 4 generator mechanic for the entire county. Ted & Clarice moved their family to Oregon in 1982 and opened Ted’s Automotive shop in Winston, Oregon for 10 years and then moved to Maui in 1991. Ted worked at HC&S in the hauler shop and then transferred over to Kahului Trucking and Storage. He left for about 4 years and was the first mechanic hired by Ryder on Maui. He opened their first shop over by Sack-N-Save. He then went back to KT&S and was in management. He retired from there in 2007. He enjoyed traveling, working on refrigeration trucks, and many friends’ vehicles. He volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and Kaunoa Senior Services Leisure Program and the Senior Softball League on Sundays.
A Celebration of Life will be on Monday, Feb.17, at 11 a.m. at the VFW in Kīhei where Ted & Clarice celebrated their 25th & 35th year anniversary parties.

February 4, 1931 – December 22, 2019

Lucille Iris Lawrence, 88, of Kahului, passed away on Dec. 22, 2019 at her residence. She was born on Feb. 4, 1931 in Pāʻia, Maui.

Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 10, 2020 at Ballard Family Mortuary, service will begin at 10:30 a.m., and burial will follow at 1 p.m. at Maui Veterans Cemetery.

Lucille was a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked as a Health Aide at Lihikai Elementary School.
She is survived by her sons, Jamie (Lori) Lawrence, Lenie (Lila) Lawrence, and Guy (Cheryl) Lawrence; sister, Ethel M. Ho of Oahu; grandchildren, Sean Lawrence, Sherron Lawrence-Daniels, Savannah Fauerbach, Chloe Lawrence, Jaden Lawrence, Mitchell Lawrence, and Jennifer Lawrence; and 1 great-grandson, Aiden Lawrence.

Primitiva Villanueva

November 27, 1930 – December 22, 2019

Primitiva “Eva” Macasieb Villanueva, 89 of Kula, Maui peacefully passed away on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2019. She was born in the Philippines on Nov. 27, 1930 to the late Diego Macasieb and Victoria Soriano.

Primitiva is survived by her children, Virginia (Miguel) Galima of Pahoa, Hawaii, Carlito (Soledad) Villanueva of Pahoa, Hawaii, Letecia (Renato) Ventanilla of Kahului, Maui, Emilia (Marcos) Muerong of Pahoa, Hawaii, Marilyn (Rodolfo) Cera of Pahoa, Hawaii, Renato (Gina) Villanueva of Pahoa, Hawaii, Precila (Gilbert) Agpaoa of Pahoa, Hawaii, Lilia (Wayne) Nakata of Wailuku, Maui, Lorena (Mannette) Carino of Kahului, Maui; nephew, Roberto (Tessie) Macasieb of Keaau, Hawaii; 31 grandchildren; and 38 great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband, Gavino Villanueva; and son, Artemio Villanueva.

Services will be held on Friday, Jan. 17, 2020 at Pahoa Sacred Heart Church in Pahoa, Hawaii. All are welcome to attend at 6 p.m. to give your condolences to Primitiva’s family. Services will continue on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020 at Pahoa Sacred Heart Church. Visitation to begin at 9 a.m. with Mass to follow at 10:00 a.m. Burial to follow concluding services at Pahoa Sacred Heart Cemetery.
