Kamehameha Maui Claims Makahiki Tournament Crown

Nearly 200 students enjoyed a day of culture and competition during the 3rd annual Maui Middle School Makahiki Championships, which  was held at the Maui High School campus this past Friday.

Kamehameha Schools Maui, coached by Jaime Palakiko, Trudi Vierra, Mike Tom, and Sharron Pali, were named Tournament Overall Champions with 99 points with Maui Waena, coached by Adrienne Pulu, finishing second with 85 points and Hāna, coached by Kaleihanamau Johnson, taking third with 62 points.

No contestant was able to win the $1000 Spear Throwing Challenge of 9 points.

Kamehameha Schools Maui 6th Grade Student, Ramzak Fruean, was able to hit the highest points of the challenge with 6 points. Fruean missed his first spear, but finished off in style with 3 spears in the 2 point zone.

“Iʻm going to train even harder for next yearʻs Spear Throwing Challenge”, Fruean said in a press release.

Maui High School Students served as officials of the tournament to work on leadership, critical thinking, and communication skills.

“We are excited to provide this opportunity for our schools and communities,” MA’A Director Renolds Fruean added.

“We believe sports is an effective educational tool to transmit important life skills, inspire school spirit and create a sense of identity.”
