Grand Wailea Resort Temporarily Suspends Operations

The Grand Wailea Resort on Maui is temporarily suspending operations beginning on Thursday, March 26 2020.

J.P. Oliver, Managing Director, Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort said, “As it has always been, the safety and security of our guests, team members and community remains our highest priority. To protect the health of all who visit and work at our resort, Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort has decided to temporarily suspend operations for 30 days beginning Thursday, March 26.”

A hotel spokesperson said the Grand Wailea is committed to reopening the resort and resuming operations as soon as safely possible.

“We are encouraging guests to reschedule their trips and adhere to the latest guidance from state and local officials to help us prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus on Maui and throughout Hawai‘i. Our team is helping current bookings find alternative accommodations should they choose to not return home,” Oliver said in a statement.

The hotel is offering employees who are placed in temporary furlough status financial support and healthcare benefits. “We are also making employees aware of options to file for unemployment, find alternative employment and use our Employee Assistance Program services as we all navigate this challenging time,” said Oliver.

“We are committed to doing all we can to support our team members, give them the resources they need in the short-term and get them back to work as soon as possible,” he said.

Hotel executives say Grand Wailea’s security team continues to closely monitor the situation and is working with the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, Hawai‘i Department of Health and various international health authorities along with the Hilton Corporate Communications team to ensure the safety of all travelers and guests of its resort.”

  • Grand Wailea continues to evaluate staffing levels at the property.
  • Grand Wailea is preparing care packages for employees and the community, including Feed My Sheep and the Maui Food Bank, using the hotel’s perishable food stock.
  • The hotel’s current inventory of toilet paper is being shared with team members.
  • Hilton’s Employee Assistance Program is being highlighted for any team member that needs counseling or just someone to speak to during this uncertain time.
  • Online educational resources are being extended and will be available to interested team members.
