Maui Health is Treating its First COVID-19 Positive Patient
Per CDC infection control protocol,
Maui Health today acknowledged that it is treating its first patient confirmed by the Hawaiʻi State Department of Health as having COVID-19. The information was provided per Centers for Disease Control and Prevention protocol.
“The patient is currently in isolation and appropriate isolation precautions are in place,” Maui Health announced this afternoon. “Maui Health is handling this case with the utmost respect to privacy, while also working closely with the DOH to ensure that patients, employees, family, friends, and anyone who has been in close contact are assessed and the extent of their exposure is reviewed. Please understand that out of respect for this individual’s privacy, additional details about this case will not be shared publicly,” according to Maui Health.
Maui Health reports that it has been taking proactive steps to mitigate exposure to its patients, caregivers, and community.
These steps reportedly include asking sick employees to stay home, increasing the use of telework, encouraging social distancing, and promoting other important preventative measures in all facilities.
Additionally, as of Wednesday, March 25, in conjunction with Mayor Victorino’s emergency work-from-home and stay-at-home orders, Maui Health instituted a no-visitor policy at all of its hospitals and facilities. No visitors will be permitted, except Pediatrics and OB, which will be limited to one visitor per patient.
“With the quickly evolving situation, we are working closely with federal, state, and local health officials to stay informed and respond appropriately to COVID-19 and influenza scenarios. We have all necessary precautions in place and our employees and physicians are ready and equipped to safely care for suspected or confirmed COVID-19 and influenza cases,” said Mike Rembis, CEO, Maui Health.
