AlohaTrace Tracks Real-Time Data of COVID-19 Spread

AlohaTrace – a community-driven data collection effort — is a new online platform that crowdsources daily information from Hawaiʻi residents to track COVID-19 through general whereabouts and interactions of those with existing symptoms.

Hawaiʻi residents are asked to share information once a day by answering six confidential and anonymous questions online. The platform was developed in collaboration with the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center at the University of Hawaii (NDPTC) and the Pacific Urban Resilience Lab (PURL).

“As the situation with COVID-19 constantly evolves we need the most current, real-time data to track and monitor the spread of the disease,” says Duane Kurisu, Chairman and CEO of aio.

“We are asking everyone in Hawaii to…share information daily – or as often as they can – as part of a community effort to create a database from which proactive action can be taken to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in our state.”

AlohaTrace uses an updated approach to contact tracking – a method proven to be successful in countries like South Korea — that provides information on who may have been infected, where they’ve been and who else they’ve been in contact with. While our privacy laws are much stricter in the US, an anonymous crowdsourced initiative like this can provide the same benefits.

AlohaTrace asks six simple questions focused on symptoms, location and movement in the community.  All Hawaii residents 13 or older, whether feeling well or unwell, are encouraged to participate daily and contribute their information.  All data will be kept confidential, anonymous and stored in a secure database.
