A peaceful Paddle Out for George Floyd was held just before sunset on the West shores of Maui on Sunday in a show of unity amid tensions nationally over the man’s death during a run in with a police officer in Minneapolis on May 25.

The paddle out comes a day after a separate peaceful demonstration on Maui held Saturday at the Hāna Highway, Haleakalā Highway intersection.

Mayor Michael Victorino released the following statement today:

“Peaceful protests are a First Amendment birthright of every American. On Maui, it’s encouraging that protests of Mr. George Floyd’s death have been peaceful. I support our citizens’ right to express their grievances and share information and concerns in pursuit of a better, more just world. We all have the right to agree or disagree, but I ask everyone to do so peacefully, with dignity and respect for each other.

“Joycelyn and I extend our sincere condolences to the Floyd family, and pray that they will find peace and closure when justice is served.”
