The National Weather Service is reporting a strong thunderstorm that will affect parts of Maui.

At 5:28 p.m. HST, the thunderstorm was located approximately 8 miles northeast of Huelo, or 21 miles east of Kahului, and was moving southwest at at 15 mph.

Winds in excess of 30 mph are possible with this storm, according to the NWS

Locations impacted include: Kīhei, Hāliʻimaile, Paʻuwela, Kīpahulu, Keōkea, Makawao, Pāʻia, Mākena, Haʻikū-Paʻuwela, Wailea, Huelo, ʻUlupalakua, Kula, Pukalani, Nāhiku, Kaupō, Hāna, Puʻunēnē, Kailua and Hoʻokipa Beach Park.

“Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle,” the NWS advises.
