DOT: Flooding at Dairy Road, Hāna Highway Intersection in Kahului
The state Department of Transportation is reporting flooding conditions at the intersection of Dairy Road and Hāna Highway in Kahului. Motorists are advised to avoid the area until conditions subside.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flood Advisory for the island of Maui until 1:45 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18, 2021. There’s also a Flood Advisory in effect for the entire island of Molokaʻi until 3 p.m.
The National Weather Service has forecast a heavy rain event for Maui County, starting today and lasting into tomorrow. The Maui Emergency Management Agency says flash flooding will likely occur in areas along Hāna Highway, windward areas, and East Molokaʻi.
“The rain will be heaviest today, in the late afternoon and early evening, with over 10 inches of rain expected along with isolated thunderstorms,” according to the advisory.
The public can expect flooding in drainages, streams, rivers, roads, properties, and other low-lying areas. The Emergency Management advisory cautions the public of potential road closures and possible landslides in areas of steep terrain.
