Haleakalā National Park Reopens Following Winter Weather

All roadways in the Summit District of Haleakalā National Park have reopened. Drivers should use caution when driving as they may encounter periodic ice on roadways.

The Summit District of Haleakalā National Park has now reopened. The road beyond Haleakalā Visitor Center at 9,740 feet extending up to the Puʻuʻulaʻula (Red Hill) at 10,023 remains closed to vehicle traffic due to icy roadways.  

There is very little snow accumulation at the summit of Haleakalā and it is predominantly ice. Ice and snow are sporadic above 9,000 feet and melting.

The National Park Service reminds visitors to stay on designated paths and trails. Going off trail may damage or kill fragile plant life hidden underneath the snow like the ʻahinahina (Haleakalā silverswords, Argyroxiphium sandwicense subsp macrocephalum). 

While enjoying the park, rangers ask the public to remember to do so responsibly by staying at least six feet away from other people and wearing a face mask when near others. 

Drivers should be prepared for slippery conditions and periodic ice on roadways.
