Unexploded Ordnance Found During Excavation in Wailea

A
A piece of unexploded ordnance was found while excavation work was being done on a property in Wailea. The incident was reported to police at around 6:34 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 8, 2021.
As a precaution, surrounding residences were evacuated, and Hoʻomua Drive was temporarily closed.
Maui Police Department’s bomb squad secured the scene.
On Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021, at about 10:15 a.m., the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team identified the ordnance as an M49A2, 60mm mortar. The mortar was taken to an open field, where it was successfully rendered safe.
The road was reopened, and residents were allowed back into the area following the investigation.
