Deadly Head-on Three-Vehicle Crash on Hāna Highway Claims Life of Maui Man

Police say speed and alcohol are suspected as factors in a head-on crash that claimed the life of a Haʻikū man on the Hāna Highway last night.

The incident was reported on the Highway, just west of Hamakuapoko at around 8:17 p.m. on Sunday.

As a result of the collision, the operator of a Ford F-150 identified as Mikael Bailey, 40, died at the scene.

According to police reports, Bailey was operating a 1999 Ford F-150 pick-up truck, and was traveling east on Hāna Highway within the west bound lane of travel. Police say the driver was illegally passing vehicles in a no passing zone when the vehicle he was in collided head on into a 2008 GMC Acadia that was driven by a 20-year-old woman from Haʻikū. Also within the Acadia was a 21-year-old Haʻikū man and a two-year-old female from Haʻikū.

Investigation reveals the GMC Acadia was traveling west bound on Hana Highway within the west bound lane of travel. Immediately following the impact between the Ford and the GMC, a secondary collision occurred when a 2006 Toyota Tacoma traveling east on Hāna Highway within the eastbound lane sideswiped the GMC Acadia.

The operator of the Toyota Tacoma, a 52-year-old Haʻikū woman did not sustain any injuries that required medical treatment.

The operator of the GMC as well as her male passenger sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment. The two-year-old child was not injured as a result of this crash, however she was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for a precautionary evaluation due to the severity of the crash.

The operator of the Ford, Mikael Bailey was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision and the airbag for the Ford did deploy. Police say he died at the scene.

Hāna Highway was closed between Hoʻokipa and Maliko Gulch for four hours while police conducted an investigation at the scene.

A final determination on factors involved, will be made by Vehicle Homicide Investigators via a toxicology report.

This was the 14th traffic fatality for the County of Maui this year as compared to six at the same time last year.
