Joseph S. Sampaia, 98, of Hilo died on Oct. 21, 2021 at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. Born in Kaumana, he retired as a supervisor for the County of Hawaiʻi Parks and Recreation, a US Army veteran who served in World War II and Asian Pacific Campaign. He was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and UPW Retiree’s Union.

Visitation to be held at Ballard Family Mortuary in Hilo at 8:30 a.m., service at 9:30 a.m. Burial to follow at Hawaiʻi State Veterans Cemetery #2. Social distancing and mask mandate required.

He is survived by daughter, Margaret A. (Walter/Bob) Lucas; sister in law, Irene Sampaia; two grandchildren; three great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Arrangements by Ballard Family Mortuary Hilo.

Richard Charles Burns

Richard Charles Burns, 69. It is with great sadness that the family of Richard Charles “Ricky” Burns of Haʻikū announces his unexpected passing on Sept. 8, 2021. He was a retired plumber with Local 675 and an avid ulua fisherman.

Born July 3, 1952, Ricky grew up in Haiku and attended St. Joseph School. He worked summers picking pineapple and graduated from St. Anthony High School in the Class of 1970. Ricky enjoyed traveling for car shows and NHRA drag races, in addition to visiting many national parks.

He is survived by brothers Robert (Mary), William (Tina), Raymond, and Sidney (Debbie); and his Uncle Edward and Aunt Albertina Franco.

A private family prayer service was held on Oct. 30, 2021 at St. Anthony Catholic Church.
