Novices learn about computer operations at Maui Economic Opportunity
Twenty-five computer novices learned skills from turning on their computer to connecting to Wi-Fi at two “Computers 001: Basic Digital Skills Workshops” held on Nov. 16 at Maui Economic Opportunity in Wailuku.
The three-hour workshop, advertised for those “who know nothing about computers,” was taught by digital literacy consultant Ka‘ala Souza at no cost to participants. All attendees, most of whom were kūpuna, also received a Google Chromebook to take home.
Souza kept the workshop moving with his energy, knowledge and stories, like the time his child in college got him to purchase a $2,000 Apple computer when a $300 Chromebook would have sufficed.
He covered the different types of devices and operating systems; use of keys, the mouse and touchpads; email; telehealth and more.
