Update: Fire mauka of Piʻilani Highway burns 50 acres

A brush fire located mauka of the Pi’ilani Highway burned an estimated 50 acres on Tuesday. Crews were able to secure the perimeter and contain the fire, according to a County of Maui update. No evacuations of residential areas were necessary. Firefighters will remain on scene today to address hot spots. The cause is undetermined.
The blaze was one of 20 emergency calls for fires over the Fourth of July holiday.
Update: 6 a.m., July 5, 2023
The Piʻilani Highway is now OPEN in both directions. Maui police say the road was reopened at around midnight.
