Strong thunderstorms to impact Lānaʻi and Molokaʻi through 12:15 a.m.

The National Weather Service says strong thunderstorms will impact Lānaʻi and Molokaʻi through 12:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024

At 10:44 p.m., Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from Kaunakakai to 20 miles west of Mānele. Movement was northeast at 40 mph. The forecast calls for wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph.

Locations impacted include: Lānaʻi City, Kawela, Pūkoʻo, Kamalo, ʻUalapuʻe, Hālawa Valley, Mānele, Kalaupapa National Park, and Lānaʻi Airport.

The National Weather Service reports that gusty showers will impact Lānaʻi and Molokaʻi through 9:45 p.m. At 9:14 p.m. HST, Doppler radar was tracking gusty showers along a line extending from Kalaupapa National Park to 29 miles southwest of Mānele. Movement was northeast at 35 mph. Wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph are in the forecast.

The NWS advises: “Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Locations impacted include: Lānaʻi City, Hoʻolehua, Kalaupapa National Park, Kamalo, ʻUalapuʻe, Kaunakakai, Hālawa Valley, Kualapuʻu, Pūkoʻo, Kawela, Mānele, Molokaʻi Airport and Lānaʻi Airport.”

The Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency reports that the Tornado Warning that was in effect for Molokaʻi through 7:45 p.m. has since been canceled, but the public is advised to be aware of changing weather conditions this evening.

The National Weather Service advises that strong thunderstorms will continue to impact Molokaʻi through 9:15 p.m.

At 7:45 p.m. HST, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from near Kepuhi to 51 miles west of Mānele. Movement was northeast at 35 mph. The forecast calls for wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph.

A Flood Advisory is now in effect until 11:30 p.m. for the island of Molokaʻi. At 8:03 p.m. HST, radar indicated a large band of heavy rain moving across the island of Molokaʻi this evening. This band will slowly drift eastward across Molokaʻi over the next few hours. Heavy rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

As a precaution, the public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. Motorists and pedestrians are advised not to cross fast-flowing or rising water in their vehicle or on foot. This Advisory may need to be extended if heavy rains persist.

A Flood Watch is also in effect for all Hawaiian Islands until Tuesday at 6 p.m. HST.

Tornado Warning for Molokaʻi

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Tornado Warning for the island of Molokaʻi until 7:45 p.m. HST on Monday, Jan. 8, 2024.

At 7:14 p.m. HST, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Kepuhi, moving north at 30 mph.

The NWS says radar indicated rotation. “Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely,” according to the NWS forecast.

This tornadic thunderstorm will remain over sparsely populated
areas of Molokaʻi including: Kepuhi and Maunaloa.

As a precaution, those in the impacted area are advised to TAKE COVER NOW. Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If you are outdoors or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.

The National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement for Maui County.

The NWS reports that strong thunderstorms will impact Molokaʻi through 7:45 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 8, 2024.

At 6:21 p.m. HST, Doppler radar was tracking strong showers and isolated thunderstorms along a line extending from near Kepuhi to 93 miles south of Barbers Point. Movement was northeast at 15 mph.

The NWS reports wind gusts of up to 35 to 45 mph. The public is advised that gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.

Locations impacted include: Hoʻolehua, Maunaloa, Kualapuu, Kalaupapa National Park, Pukoʻo,
ʻUalapuʻe, Kaunakakai, Halawa Valley, Kepuhi, Kawela, Kamalo, and Molokaʻi Airport.

As a precaution, those outdoors should consider seeking shelter inside a building.
