Founded in 1969, Warren S. Unemori Engineering, Inc., is a professional civil engineering firm whose involvement with numerous construction projects across Maui has helped to benefit the island’s communities and contributed to the advancement of the engineering profession.
Its founder, Warren Unemori, was born and raised in Kaupakalua near Haʻikū. After serving in the US Army during the Korean War, he enrolled at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa on the G. I. Bill and graduated as a Civil Engineer in 1959, and subsequently worked for 10 years at the Maui District Office of the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation, Highways Division, before starting his own firm.
Over the past 55 years, Unemori Engineering has worked on a wide range of planning, design and construction projects including many of Maui’s roadways, water systems, and commercial and residential subdivisions. Some of the company’s more notable projects that have contributed to Maui County’s growth and prosperity include the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center, the Maui Research & Technology Park, the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, and numerous residential housing projects across the county in Maui Lani, Kehalani, Lahaina, Upcountry, Waiehu, Waikapū, and on Molokaʻi.
The company has also mentored and trained a number of Maui’s sons and daughters including many young college graduates who began their careers at Unemori Engineering and went on to become prominent professionals and community leaders.
Both of Unemori’s sons followed in his footsteps as professional engineers and leaders of their family business. Alan Unemori became Unemori Engineering’s president in 2008, and was succeeded by his brother Darren Unemori in 2019.
