Olowalu, Maui File PC: Branden Hazlet (2017)

The National Weather Service issued a Coastal Flood Statement saying minor coastal flooding is expected over the next several days during high tide.

Peak high tides associated with the lunar cycle and water levels that are running higher than predicted will lead to minor coastal flooding along shorelines and low-lying coastal areas through the weekend and into Monday afternoon. Coastal flooding will coincide with the daily peak tide each afternoon for portions of Maui, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe, Kauaʻi, Niʻihau, Oʻahu and the Big Island.

Impacts could include flooding of beaches that are normally dry, minor coastal erosion, and saltwater inundation.

As a precaution, the public is advised to avoid driving through flooded roadways. If you are forced to drive through salt water, be sure to rinse your vehicle with fresh water. Move electronics, vehicles or other valuables to higher ground. Monitor vessels to ensure mooring lines don’t get too tight and watch out for overwash around boat ramps. Secure canoes or other watercraft stowed on beaches.

The public is invited to submit their coastal flooding photos to the University of Hawaiʻi Sea Grant College Program’s Hawaiʻi and Pacific Islands King
Tides Project at: PacificIslandsKingTides.org.
