Firefighters observe as many as six ignition points at Piʻihana Road fire
As many as six initial ignition locations were found when crews arrived on scene to fight the Piʻihana Road fire on Monday morning, officials said. The fire was first reported at 9:16 a.m. on July 22, 2024. It burned a total of four acres before forward progress was stopped at 11:36 a.m., and it was fully contained at 2:45 p.m., according to department reports.
The fire resulted in mandatory evacuations at 45 homes along Piʻihana Road, and voluntary evacuations in Happy Valley, Puʻuohala Village, and Wailuku Country Estates. All evacuations were lifted by 1 p.m. One firefighter was treated at the scene for heat distress, according to fire officials.
Crews used extended lines and water tankers to contain the fires. Firefighters remained on scene into the afternoon to mop up the fire and work toward full extinguishment.
Responding units included: Engine 1, Engine 10, Tanker 10, Hazmat 10, Engine 3, Tanker 3, Relief Engine 50, Relief Engine 6, Tanker 14, a battalion chief, fire investigator and tankers from Goodfellow Bros. and Alpha Construction.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
