FBI and Maui police issue joint public safety warning regarding potential explosive devices
The FBI and Maui Police Department are working jointly on an investigation into recent reports of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) on the Island of Maui.
Several devices have been recovered in the Kahului and Pukalani areas. On July 23, Wailuku patrol officers responded to the area near the intersection of Lono and Hina Ave. in Kahului for a suspicious item on the roadway. An investigation determined the contents were more likely an improvised pyrotechnic device rather than an IED.
The IEDs may look like small, makeshift baskets (see photo above), but their appearances may vary.
While no injuries have been reported, the FBI and MPD are seeking the public’s help in reporting any suspicious activity that could present a threat to public safety, such as someone leaving an object unattended in a public space. “If you have information, or if you suspect you know someone who could be
responsible for these devices,” the FBI asks that a report be made immediately to tips.fbi.gov or 1-800-CALLFBI (1-800-225-5324).
“We encourage the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious activities that could present a threat to public safety. If you see something suspicious in the road, such as an object that appears out of place, do not touch, drive over, or go near it for any reason. If possible, keep others away from the area and call 911 immediately,” according to the safety warning.
