An Aug. 9 blessing at Wahikuli Park marked the beginning of a sewer line installation for the Kilohana temporary housing site in Lahaina. The sewer line is making it possible, for the first time, for more than two dozen Fleming Road property owners to connect with the Maui County sewage system. PC: County of Maui

For the first time, 29 lots on Fleming Road in Lahaina will have the opportunity to access Maui County sewer service, but there are some requirements for property owners, according to an announcement.

Property owners will need to properly abandon their septic system or cesspool to the satisfaction of the state Department of Health, and they’ll be required to obtain permits from the County’s Department of Public Works Development Services Administration.

Access to the county sewage system will be possible because the US Army Corps of Engineers has committed to installing a sewer line within the Fleming Road and Malo Street area beginning this month. The project is part of providing sewage service for the nearby Kilohana temporary housing site. Work is expected to be completed in December.

Due to restrictions of working on private property, the Army Corps will install a sewer lateral in the right of way within 2 feet of the property owner’s front lot line with a clean-out on the surface. Owners will be required to have their plumbing contractor relocate this clean-out to be on their property within 2 feet of the property line.

If relocation of the clean-out on a property is problematic, residents should contact the Wastewater Reclamation Division at 808-270-7417 to get approval for the final location.

For assistance navigating the streamlined emergency permitting process, visit the County’s Recovery Permit Center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the County of Maui Service Center, 110 ‘Ala‘ihi St., Suite 207, at the corner of Hookele and ‘Ala‘ihi streets in Kahului. There, representatives from County contractor 4LEAF Inc. are available to answer questions. The Recovery Permit Center may also be reached by calling 808-270-5724 or visiting https://mapps.mauicounty.gov/DSA-DRBP
